The Department of Transportation (DOTr) demands Google to include bike lane routes in the Philippines on Google Maps to help cyclists on their daily commutes.
Secretary Arthur Tugade stated that it will be a great innovation for Google Maps because many Filipinos are now riding bikes as their primary mode of transportation, which provides significant health benefits since the pandemic is still present.
Tugade said that the department is already coordinating with Google and waiting for its approval.
“We have asked Google to consider this suggestion top priority considering the increasing number of Filipino cyclists. We are confident that we can win their support on this,” he added.
The DOTr has completed its 500-kilometer bike lane network in metropolitan cities across the country, including Metro Manila (313.12 kilometers), Metro Cebu (129.47 kilometers), and Metro Davao (54.74 kilometers).
Pavement markings, physical separators, solar-powered road studs, thermoplastic paints, road signage, and bike racks are all features of these bike lanes that funded under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.
